Plan the Perfect Picnic
The past year has turned me into a real lover of picnics. I think they are such a wonderful, effortless way to get outside and enjoy some fresh air and sunshine. I appreciate that you can make them into something romantic (best cheap date I’ve found!) or use them to make memories with the whole family. I’ve included below the components to an unforgettable picnic experience.
Blanket & Basket
I made the choice to purchase a large picnic blanket when my oldest was just a few months old. They are great as an outdoor play mat for the backyard. Now that my kids are a little older, we use the picnic blanket as it was intended and always keep it in the trunk of our car for impromptu park trips. Picnic blankets are great because they usually have a waterproof bottom layer that is resilient to wet grass and dirt. To boost the aesthetic of my picnic, I lay a linen or floral sheet on top of the blanket and it provides the perfect backdrop for our little gathering.
If you do not have a picnic basket, any large tote or bag will do or even a portable cooler. I do not usually have a need for anything insulated, as I tend to pack foods which require no refrigeration.
Peppermint Spray
If you want to keep bugs away from you and your food, peppermint spray is your best friend. I mix water with some peppermint essential oil drops in a spray bottle, shake it up and spray it along the edges of my picnic blanket. It keeps the ants and other critters at bay and allows us to enjoy our picnic in peace.
Simple Foods
I have two rules with picnic foods: nothing runny and nothing that requires refrigeration. The way I see it, I am there to enjoy myself with minimal effort, not create a multiple course, fine dining experience. I generally stick to finger foods such as cheese, fruit, and crackers. Occasionally, we will pre-make sandwiches with minimal ingredients and nothing too messy. Wrapping sandwiches in wax paper and tying them with twine or ribbon is an elevated way to enjoy a simple classic. For dessert, try pre-made macarons. Trader Joe’s has some great varieties if you are searching for something last minute.
A Darling Display
The way to make a picnic with simple foods stand out is by displaying it all beautifully. For instance, a small wooden serving board looks a lot better than disposable paper plates. Fresh cut flowers set a romantic tone and play off of the natural setting. Keep things uncluttered and choose in season fruits with vibrant colors to add to the overall aesthetic.
Acrylic Drinkware
Last but not least, try swapping out your regular wine glasses with acrylic ones. They look just as classy and still serve as the perfect vessel for your rosé but are much more durable and shatter resistant. Personally, I am very attached to my wine glasses and don’t want to run the risk of them breaking in transit. Acrylic wine glasses have been the perfect solution.
